Need a little help understanding if a 3D-ready AV receiver is truly required.

I should be able to connect my PS3 directly to my 3D TV via high speed HDMI for the video. I am thinking an optical digital output from my TV back to my Onkyo TX-SR507 receiver for surround audio.

Would that bypass the need for a newer 3D-ready AV receiver?

Any help would be great. Thanks.

The setup you describe should bypass the need for a 3D a/v receiver. If you connect 3D sources (game console, blu-ray player, cable box, etc) to your a/v receiver, that receiver must have "3D pass thru" technology to view 3D content. As long as you don't have any 3D sources going through your a/v receiver, you shouldn't have any issues.
