It's pretty evident that kids are the biggest fans of 3D animation movies in the present day and age. And considering the number of movies of the same genre being made keeping kids as a target audience, the trend is here to stay. But why this fascination for 3D with kids? Perhaps it is the fact that 3D effects always make everything a little bit more immediate and intense, or maybe it is that the kids of the present generation are plain bored with simple cartoons. And of course, we adults are catching on too, with some movies bordering on the thin line between kids' movies and family movies.

Here's a list of those movies which seem to be the most popular among kids:
    • Toy Story and Toy Story 2 (1995 and 1999): A Pixar classic, there's a little bit of everything in this movie - sibling rivalry, separation (when the toys are separated from one another and from their owner), meanness (portrayed by Andy's neighbor Sid, who mutilates toys just for fun's sake) and everything else. Some parents loved watching it with their kids, while others claimed they didn't want their toddlers to learn words like 'shut up', 'stupid' and the like shown in the movie. However, a majority said that this was a great family-oriented adventure comedy.
    • Under the Sea 3D (2009): This is actually a 3D nature documentary, with stunning visuals. Some of the most exotic, most remote places on earth are explored by undersea explorers. The beauty of the oceans depicted here is sure to leave a lasting impact on young minds and open their eyes to new possibilities.
    • Monsters vs Aliens (2009): Meant for kids aged 7 years or more. A woman is transformed into a giant after she is struck by a meteorite on her wedding day and becomes part of a team of monsters sent in by the U.S. government to defeat an alien mastermind trying to take over our planet.
    • Up (2009): Touted to be one of the best animation movies ever (and not just for kids). This is a comedy adventure about a 78-year-old balloon salesman Carl, who finally fulfills his lifelong dream of a great adventure when he ties thousands of balloons to his house and flies away to the wilds of South America. In the words of a critic who summed it up perfectly: 'An exquisite work of cinematic art that also happens to be the funniest, most touching, most exciting and most entertaining movie released so far.'
    • How to Train Your Dragon and How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2010 and 2014): The endearing story of a friendship between the protagonist (Hiccup) and his pet dragon (Toothless). The first movie has Hiccup tossed into a dragon-fighting school, where he endeavors to prove himself as a true Viking, but when he befriends an injured dragon whom he names Toothless, he has the chance to plot a new course for his people's future. The sequel finds the pair at the center of a battle to protect Berk from a power-hungry warrior named Drago.
A couple of big names have released recently such as Walt Disney's Big Hero 6 (the story of a young robotics prodigy named Hiro Hamada, who forms a superhero team to combat a masked villain) and some are lined up for release like DreamWorks' Penguins of Madagascar (the story of how a couple of plucky penguins join forces with a chic undercover organization and try to stop a many-tentacled villain, Dr. Octavius Brine, from destroying the world) and Home (again DreamWorks, about an overly optimistic yet inept alien race called the Boov led by Captain Smek which invades earth to hide from their mortal enemy and make it their new home).

Do you have any more to add to the ever-growing list?

For pure 3D spectacle I suggest "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" it has some pretty bold 3D and the movie is fun to watch (I'm an adult and I enjoyed it)
Both of the Despicable Me movies are good as well but the 3D is more subtle. The Wizard of Oz conversion was great and it's one of those timeless movies for kids.
