I've heard that 3D HDMI cables are now available for sale, there is also a link on the HDMI specs website : http://www.hdmi.org/manufacturer/hdmi_1_4/3d.aspx

It appears that this used HDMI 1.4 to transmit the 3D images.

Do I need to get a new HDMI cable? Is there a way to find out what type of cable I currently own?

to display 3D you will need a 1.4v HDMI cable, 1.4 also adds ethernet which saves you having to configure all your devices to share an internet connection (you only need to configure one)
