What is checkerboard and line-by-line 3D TV?

After reading up to see if my TV can do 3D, I had a look at some newer models from Samsung and they seem to use "checkerboard" 3D. Others use "line by line" or "frame interleave".

What is the difference between them, and is there a standard format that 3DTV will use? Or does a 3D decoder just adapt the data to fit the display method, so all three would work from the same source?

Sorry if these are silly questions, but I am not familiar with this sort of thing.

Thank you very much for those links, that first one explained everything I needed to know. I didn't know it was possible to get Plasma 3DTVs, so now I understand how the technology works a little more.

How long do you think it will be before we start to see the 3D capabilities of TVs advertised in stores?
